I am so excited to show you my new and improved Master bedroom! This took my handsome husband and I one day to install and another 3 for me to do the finishing (caulking, and painting.)
First, pull off the existing floor board. This could be skipped, but we wanted the floor board to match the rest of the wall.
Replace the floor board with a 1×4, (we used primed MDF) cut to fit.
Measure the wall and decide how far apart you want your boards and of course space them evenly. This will all depend on the length of the wall. Spacing will also depend on the power outlets. Ours are spaced about 19 1/2 inches apart, to give you an idea. We bought 10 foot length 1 x 4 primed MDF boards and just cut them in half; which gave us 5 foot boards. Once stacked on the floor board, and with the crown on top, our board and batten is 68 1/2 inches high. There’s a lot of flexibility with this project! It can be as high or low as you want.
We used a nail gun to attach the boards to the wall, it went pretty fast! We nailed a
1 x 2 along the top.
Now for the crown molding shelf. Nail an angled piece of crown to the 1 x 2, making sure it’s level.
Should look like this:
Last, nail a 1 x 4 along the top to create the shelf. The pictures should help this make sense : )
Don’t skip caulking on this project!
Once caulked, and lightly sanded, it’s paint time! (The worst part to me!) We used Valspar Paint + Primer in Ultra White, Semi-gloss.
TA – DA!!
Here’s the only BEFORE picture I managed to find: I was so excited, I forgot to take a proper before….
And a few more of the AFTER!
A couple insights to my decor choices: The framed ‘I LOVE YOU’ is a gift my husband got me on a trip he took to Sea World while we were in high school! Kind of scary right? We were 17 and in love. Crazy, but here we are! Naturally, it carries sentimental value, and luckily the colors are perfect : ) The smaller black frame is an actual picture I took of our initials and hand prints in the sand at Bear Lake, just a couple years ago. A wedding picture on canvas and just a couple other items finish the look. While decorating the shelf, I kept wondering if it looked good. I wondered if how I was doing it was right or not. Then I finally realized, if I like it, then it looks good. That’s how we make our spaces personal, right? WE like it!
Other helpful info:
Total cost for the wood, paint, and caulk : $156
All the bedding is from IKEA. I got the yellow pillows and the ruffle throw in the AS-IS section. It all came in under $100!

Thank you Lowena! We used 2 inch brad nails. And no, we did not use any wood glue. We just used the nails and caulked.
Oh good! So glad it was helpful. Thanks so much for your comment!
Thank you for the pictures of how to do the ledge! I could NOT figure this out on my own, haha! It looks amazing 🙂
HI! Thank you for your straightforward instructions.. the project turned out amazing! What sizes nails didn’t you use? And you never had to use wood glue to attach especially the crown molding?
Hi Ken! We used the nail gun and just shot some brad nails in at an angle, through the 1×4 and into the wall. That worked fine for us. I hope that helps!
The 1×4 Piece on top. You secure the 1×4 to the crown in the front. How did you secure the top piece 1×4 to the wall?
Oh I’m so happy you love it Karen! It makes a huge difference for sure! Good luck on your wall! We would love to see a picture if you think of it. 🙂
Love this idea so much I have jumped all cover it and couldn’t wait to create our feature Master bedroom wall!! Thank you for putting it out there 🙂
Hi Peter! Thank you for your comment. The platform bed is just from Ikea. 🙂
Absolutely love the way the wall added character to the room. Can you please tell me where you got the actual platform bed from i have been looking for one like that and can’t seem to find one.
Thanks Lu meier :). No I don’t think the lower window would look funny, I think it would still look best using the higher window to determine how high to do the board and batten wall. Good luck on you walls!
Loved the wall. I would love to do two walls. Each wall has a window and the windows are different heights so would by using the higher window would it make the lower window look funny or lost
Thanks so much Ron! We actually used a 1 x 6 board for the floor board.
did you use 1×4 for floor board home room so it match awesome job i gonna try this
Yes, the wood is all secured to the wall using a nail gun. 🙂
This is just the idea I have been looking for! Did you secure the 1/4 to the wall? If not, is it pretty sound and stable?
Hi Rosalyn, thank you! We just used a silicone based paintable caulk. An acrylic caulk would work too. 🙂
hi just loved it, my husband and I just finished putting up the wood and I was wondering what you used for the caulking.
Thanks
Roz
Thank you Jordan! I think the board and batten would look just fine with the normal textured dry wall. I’m ready to do in about every room of my house! It makes such a difference!
You did a great job! Looks so classy. I’m wanting to do this in our living room. Are your walls textured? Mine are (just normal run of the mill, textured dry wall) and I’m wondering how the white wall will look through the board and batten if it’s textured? Any thoughts?
