I have 5 school desks in my house now. I have a small obsession with them. I can’t say I would be able to pass up a few more if I get the chance. I’ve still got a few plans and ideas I’d like to try. You can see what I’ve done with 3 of the 5desks in this post. And the other 2 have found a home in my craft room. Quick history on my craft room: Oh man-I have dreamed of having a craft room! Our house is a multi level and has a large room just off the family room. It was the perfect playroom, and then I realized after a year and a half that the kids didn’t play in the playroom. It was just where the toys were stored and moved in and out of. So I took it over; and felt a little guilty about it, but my guilt was short lived. My kids haven’t missed the playroom one bit-the bins of toys are in a closet across the hall and in the unfinished basement where they love to play. Win-win! My craft hoarding is neatly contained into one room and I can leave projects mid-project and not have to clean everything up. Best ever. : )
Student desks turned craft table
This is an UPDATE. I submitted this desk to the adorable Mandi from Vintage Revivals during a week of craft fails she was doing and she posted it on her blog! Guys! She’s a big deal and so Steff and I were super pumped to be featured on her blog…..even if it was a FAILURE project. Ha ha:) (Check out our claim to fame feature HERE.)
This is the true story of how this project started:
This is my Chevron reclaimed school desk! Like many projects-I just started on a whim the second I felt motivated. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any white paint. I did have some OLD cream colored paint though; I was in project mode and I was using it! We can see how well that worked out. Turns out, paint DOES go bad! After some extra elbow grease and a trip to my beloved Home Depot, I started again with some fresh white paint and went with stripes instead.
Who knew craft fails were such a hit?
We’ll definitely be sure to share more as they do happen often. 🙂
UPDATE ended. 🙂
On to the desks!
They started out like this:
Gum and everything!
After I slapped on some rubber gloves to scrape off the gum (so gross….) I cleaned the entire desk really well, removed the wire basket and sprayed them with white primer.
Then I sprayed them with 2 coats of Aqua.
Next, I taped off some random sized stripes on the tops.
Two coats of white-
Then I finished them with a spray sealer.
They are the perfect craft table: they are light so I can easily move them if needed. They make a long, skinny ‘table’ which fits perfectly as an island work area in the room.
Plus they are super cool!
