Okay-the title of this post is an understatement! I am certain our house is built directly on THE home base of all ant colonies. Actually, our neighborhood, it’s a neighborhood problem. The good news is, they are little tiny sugar ants which is really much better than spiders or cockroaches or even regular sized ants in my opinion. They are a huge nuisance, yes, but they don’t bite or do any real damage; unless they are in the garden! Last summer, these little sugar ants got to nearly every cantaloupe we grew before we did. So this year when I spotted them I had to figure something out; they already got to a zucchini and a couple tomatoes! I did some research on the glorious internet and wrote down a recipe on a scrap of paper.
This is home made Terro, which is an ant poison we use all the time in the house. I was excited to make a batch and try it out.
The recipe:
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon Borax
1/2 cup water
Mix the 3 ingredients in a saucepan and boil for 3 minutes.
Let cool completely.
I poured some in a sour cream lid and set it in the garden. The ants can’t resist it! They load it up and take it back home and after a couple days my garden is ant free! I also put a small lid in the corner of our family room, the current indoor problem area. This has worked just as well as the real stuff, but it made a lot and it is much less expensive! Hooray!
