Sweater Trees! Easy, cheap (free)

December 6, 2013 By: Melanie

Craft hoarding pays off again!!  I have kept this giant box around that our Ikea Poang Chair came in because it was perfectly square, and about 3 inches deep– perfect for becoming a wall hanging of some sort.  But then I found it’s true calling!
Trees!  Cute sweater trees!  They are so easy, and cheap….or FREE!

Oh I love these things!  I am so thrilled with how they turned out from using cardboard and sweater/fabric scraps.  So hit your recycling bin,  grab some old sweaters and you’re ready to make a set of your own!
Here’s all you need:
  • Cardboard
  • Sweaters and/or fabric scraps
  • box cutter
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • hot glue gun
  • burlap
Start by drawing tall skinny triangles on the cardboard, making them any size you want!  These range from about 8 inches to 18 inches.

Use a box cutter to cut them out.

Hot glue a square of burlap onto the trunk of each tree.2013-12-05 15_10_10

Okay, for me as a craft hoarder, I had sweaters and extra fabric laying around from my  sweater stockings.  I just knew they would be useful somehow.2013-12-05 15_01_36

Choose your fabric and lay it on the trees.  Hot glue the sweater piece in a few spots on the front,

then flip it over, cut to size, wrap and glue.december 2013 049

That’s it!  These just lean up against the wall on my shelf and look amazing!  I am totally in love with them!

A little free decorating is the best!    What do you think?  Are you ready to craft hoard just a bit?

I’ve got another project using cardboard I’ll be sharing soon, the same box even.
So worth holding on to. : )
Have a great weekend!
*UPDATE*- We showed this project along with our DIY Santa Bags on Channel 2’s Fresh Living.  See the segment HERE.  We had a blast!

Thanks for sharing your original idea. I, too, am a craft materials hoarder . . but it’s not hoarding if you are inspired to find uses for it!
