Chalkboard Party Sign + Wood Connection Giveaway!

May 12, 2014 By: Melanie

chalkboard party sign (16)

We’re so excited about our latest Wood Connection project!  We’re over on their blog today sharing this tutorial as well-  be sure to swing by for lots of other great project ideas!  (Click HERE to visit their blog.) We love, love these arrow cut-out’s and with a few parties in our future we thought they would make perfect party signs. We painted them with chalkboard paint so they are super versatile.  They can say whatever we want: “Party,”  “Baby Shower,” “Happy Birthday,”  “Welcome,”  “Bridal Shower,” “BBQ”…….  you get the picture. 🙂  We drilled a hole in the corner to tie some balloons right onto the sign because nothing says PARTY like balloons!!

Here’s what you need from The Wood Connection:

  • Arrow cut out
  • Stake
  • Chalkboard paint
  • Foam Brush

Other Supplies:

  • Primer
  • Drill
  • Bracket (for attaching the stake)

Before any painting, drill a hole in the top corner of the arrow to tie the balloons through.  Chalkboard party sign (7)

Next put a coat of Primer on.  We used spray primer. Chalkboard party sign (4)

After priming the wood, sand it  just a bit for a good smooth surface.Chalkboard party sign (5)

Wipe off all the dust from sanding and start painting with the chalkboard paint.  Three coats is just right.Chalkboard party sign (6)

One of the tricks to painting with chalkboard paint is to let it “cure” for three days before using.  Yes 3 days!  Unfortunately, this doesn’t make for a good last minute project.  After 3 days attach a bracket and the stake.  We found this bracket at Home Depot. You could skip the bracket and just screw the stake right to the back of the sign.  We wanted ours to be double sided so we chose this bracket that attaches to the bottom of the arrow.Chalkboard party sign (2)

Next trick to chalkboard paint:   Use the side of a piece of chalk and color over the entire surface.  This preps the chalkboard  for writing and easily erasing.  Chalkboard party sign (3)

We painted both sides of the arrow sign.  On one side we wrote ‘WELCOME’ and on the other we wrote ‘Thanks for coming’ It can be placed right by the front door for guests to read as they come in and when they go.  Chalkboard party sign (14)Chalkboard party sign (13)chalkboard party sign (15) chalkboard party sign (17)

We are so excited to use these for an upcoming Baby Shower and Birthday party!
