JOY Letters and Yarn Tree

December 8, 2014 By: Melanie

JOY Letters and Yarn tree (5)

Happy Monday!  We hope you had a great weekend!  We got some winter/campfire  family pictures taken (can’t wait to see them), hit up Zoo Lights (on possibly the most crowded night of the year…), and watched Home Alone (forgot how much I like that movie!), making for a super fun Christmas-y weekend.

Today we are happy to share this little Christmas project using some beautiful supplies from the Ribbon Retreat!  We shared this over on their blog last week.  Check out their blog HERE for tons of adorable and affordable Christmas ideas!   This is a super simple project to add some real charm to your Christmas set up.

Here’s what you need:

  • Wood or Paper Mache letters
  • Frayed Chiffon Grass (about 1 yard)
  • Gold and Silver buttons
  • One wood dowel cap
  • Styrofoam cone
  • Yarn
  • Hot glue
  • Gold Ribbon
  • One toilet paper tube
  • White paint

To start, paint the letters white.  Our letters are 8 inches tall, like THIS one.JOY Letters and Yarn tree (15)

Next,  mark and cut the chiffon grass to fit each letter.JOY Letters and Yarn tree (14)

Then use hot glue to attach the chiffon pieces to the letters.JOY letters

Done!  Now let’s do the pretty tree.  Use some fluffy white yarn and simply wrap the styrofoam cone with it.  Use a bit of hot glue at the top and bottom.  JOY Letters and Yarn tree (12)

Now for the jewel star – start by painting a wood dowel cap white.  Choose the buttons you would like to use on the star. JOY Letters and Yarn tree (7)

Because these are buttons, they have a button loop on the back.  Use a good pair of scissors and cut it off (it’s plastic.)  Now the buttons will be flat against the wood ball surface. JOY Letters and Yarn tree (6)

Then just hot glue the buttons to the wood dowel cap.JOY Letters and Yarn tree (11)

For the trunk of the tree, we used a piece of a toilet paper tube.   The tree just needed a little something on the bottom.  We simply wrapped the tube with the pretty gold ribbon and hot glued it to the bottom of the tree.JOY Letters and Yarn tree (10) JOY Letters and Yarn tree (9)

Last, hot glue the jewel covered wood ball to the top of the tree.  A beautiful vintage looking star!JOY Letters and Yarn tree (2)

To finish the letters off, add a piece of ribbon and put it out for display!JOY Letters and Yarn tree (4) JOY Letters and Yarn tree (8) JOY Letters and Yarn tree (3)

The letters have a beautiful snowy kind of look, and paired with gold?  Perfect.  We are totally crushing on all things white and gold.

Have a great Monday everyone!

I love this! I’m going to have to look for some of that frayed chiffon!
