Yes you read that right! For less than $5 you can make custom letters for any word you choose! This is a project we shared over at Fun, Cheap, or Free a few weeks ago, but it turned out so nice it’s worth sharing twice! It’s a great way to add some fun charm to any room without spending mega bucks. AND they can be painted any color you choose!
Here’s all you need to make your own custom letters or words:
- A pack of wood shims (found by the lumber at the hardware store)
- Wood glue
- Scissors
- Paint
- Sanding block
Wood shims are fat on one end and gradually get thinner on the other end.
Because one end of the shim is thin, we can just use scissors to cut that end to size! No big tools necessary!
Step 1: Cut the shims to the size you want. These shims are 12 inches long, so we made our letters 12 inches high.
We cut the cross lines of our letters to 8 inches. Some heavy duty scissors would likely work better than our everyday household scissors, but we were still able to cut through them. Once all your letter pieces are cut, use a sanding block to smooth out all the sides.
Step 2: Use wood glue to glue the letters together. Using clips to hold them in place is helpful while they dry.
Step 4: Hang your word using Command strips. The letters are really light, so Command strips work perfectly!
Done in less than an hour and less than 5 bucks – now that’s a good craft! 🙂

What a neat idea, and I just happen to already have some of those wooden sticks! I may just have to give this a try. PINNING!
