DIY Halloween Sign

October 20, 2015 By: Melanie

Have you noticed nearly EVERY project we post begins with ‘DIY?’  We’ve noticed too.   We figure either we’re in a rut with blog post titles or we’re just really legit ‘do-it-yourself-ers.’  Let’s go with the latter. 🙂  With that said, today we’re sharing a super cute DIY Halloween Sign.  This is an easy project that only costs about $10!  For reals. Everything but the ribbon can be purchased at The Home Depot.  Ready for all the juicy details?!

Trick or Treat Halloween sign-a simple slat sign using scrap wood and address stickers. Quick, easy, and inexpensive Halloween decoration!

Here’s what you need:

  • Three, 18 inch 1 x 4 boards
  • Two 1 1/2 inch boards, cut 9 inches long (for the cross boards)
  • Address stickers (from Home Depot)
  • Wood glue
  • Paint
  • Ribbon
  • Hot glue

Home Depot will cut the wood and everything for you if you’d prefer.  Grab one 6 foot 1 x 4 common board and one 1 1/2 inch 6 foot board (I think that’s the shortest length it comes in.)  Then snag yourself a Home Depot employee and ask them to cut the 1 x 4 into 18 inch lengths, and the 1 1/2 inch board into two 9 inch lengths.  Of course you could cut it yourself at home too.  We made these as a way to use up some scrap wood. 🙂

Scrap wood cut and turned into a DIY slat signUse some wood glue to attach the cross boards, making sure the ends are lined up.  Our cross boards are about 2 inches in from the edge. Put a little weight on it while it dries.  You could also use a brad nailer to attach the cross boards.  Scrap wood and a little wood glue for an easy DIY slat signOnce the glue is dry, paint the sign.  We chose to use the “back” side for ours, meaning the side with the cross boards, but either side is cute!  For the words, we used address stickers from the Home Depot.  If you don’t have a craft cutter that can cut vinyl, this is the perfect solution!  We do have a Silhouette, but these address stickers are so  easy for a project like this!  Our letters are the 3 inch ones.  Address stickers from the hardware store can be used as craft vinylJust use a ruler and pencil to draw a very light line to follow so your letters will all be straight.  Then erase the pencil line.  We ended up writing the word ‘or’ by hand using a paint marker.  Because I’m a little obsessed with black and white this Halloween, we went with a cute black and white ribbon to make a bow then hot glued it to the top of the sign.   And we LOVE it!DIY Halloween Sign using scrap wood and address stickers

Not bad for some wood scraps. 🙂Trick or Treat Halloween sign using scrap wood, address stickers and a little ribbonThe black board behind the sign is from the Dollar Store- we used chalk to draw the spider webs, the mason jar is one we spray painted white.  The black and white pot is from a previous post, see how to paint stripes on a round pot HERE.

This is a perfect ‘do-it-yourself’ afternoon craft.  We might make one for every holiday and occasion.  It can totally be double sided too…….as we’ll be sharing soon. 🙂  Have a faBOOlous day!
