It’s October 1st! Halloween everything is a GO! I’m so excited to share this DIY Mad Hatter hat and costume with you. This is my daughters costume from last year and it’s right up there on my favorites list. It turned out so dang cute! We pieced together the entire costume from top to bottom, would you believe we made the hat too?! Out of cardboard?!! Seriously, I was somewhat shocked when it turned out so well.
I would say I’m fairly resourceful when it comes to DIY anything, but I most definitely did not come up with this cardboard hat plan on my own. I was curious enough to google ‘DIY Mad Hatter Hat’ and so grateful I found exactly what I was looking for. HERE is the link for the instructions I used from instructables.com. You will definitely want to check out his tutorial as I can’t seem to find pictures from every step. Probably because I wasn’t sure how it would work out so I didn’t take pictures until I realized it worked! Ha ha! I sure love when projects work out.
We did a lot of ‘curling’ on the sides of the brim by rolling the cardboard up. To finish the hat, we tied a big piece fabric around the base of the hat and tied a bow in the back. Then we added some feathers and the classic 10/6 tag. On a side note, we wondered what the 10/6 paper was and googled that too! It’s a price tag in old English money and means ’10 shillings sixpence.’ The Mad Hatter carried hats around to sell and even the one on his head was up for sale. 🙂
And the whole costume:
Some purple leggings, layered with some black and white striped socks, a blue tulle skirt, a borrowed dress jacket, and a big loose bow around her neck made of fabric. Literally, just a long piece of fabric-no sewing required for any of it. Pretty cute right? Such a fun costume to really make your own!
Have you started thinking about costumes yet? Only one of my girls has decided for sure what she wants to be, we’re working on (aka: pressuring slightly) the other 3 – I like to get them done early in the month so we can party all month long!
