Christmas Porch Sign

November 9, 2015 By: Melanie

HO HO HO Christmas Porch Sign

Hey friends!  We are and excited to share a fun Christmas porch sign with you today! We are sharing it over at The Wood Connection as well- be sure to hop over there and check out all the amazing projects on their blog. We are sure you’ve seen the slat signs the Wood Connection has, but have you seen the bigger porch size slat signs?  So dang cute. We thought the phrase ‘HO HO HO’ would be just perfect for a cute outdoor sign.  We are also excited to share a cool trick we recently figured out to save some money on vinyl when using it as a stencil.

So here’s what you need:

  • Porch slat sign
  • Stain
  • White paint
  • Red paint
  • Self adhesive shelf liner (this is the trick we’ll talk about in a minute 🙂
  • Ribbon
  • Foam brushes and sanding block

Step 1:  Put a coat of stain on the slat sign.  We used this Minwax Wood Sheen in Colonial Walnut.

Step 2:  Paint the slat sign with white paint.Christmas Porch Sign (5) Christmas Porch Sign (4)

Step 3:  Use a cutting machine to cut the words ‘HO HO HO’ onto some self adhesive shelf liner.  This is an awesome trick we just recently came up with – – using shelf liner in place of vinyl.  Why?  Shelf liner is much less expensive than vinyl!  We picked up a big roll for $5 at Walmart.  This trick is mostly useful for projects using the reverse vinyl technique (using the vinyl as a stencil,) because the color of the vinyl doesn’t matter for the finished product.  We used the Silhouette Cameo on the same settings as with vinyl to cut the shelf liner.  Worked perfectly!  (Our letters are 7 inches high.)

Step 4:  Peel off the words and place them on the slat sign.   We left enough space at the top of the sign to tie a piece of ribbon around it. Press each letter down really well to prevent any paint from seeping through.

Step 5:  Paint over the whole thing with red.

Last, peel off the letters and sand over the sign as much as you’d like.  We did quite a bit of sanding to give it a weathered look.  We also added a piece of wired burlap ribbon around the top.Cute Christmas Porch sign

Done!  Perfect for decorating the front porch for Christmas!  Of course, it would be darling inside the house too. 😉Christmas Porch Sign (10) Christmas Porch Sign (8)

Hi Allison! Thanks for your comment! 🙂 I know the Wood Connection carries them still in the store, I wasn’t able to find them online either. They have some items they don’t offer online because they can’t ship them, but if you are able to get to a store, they should have them. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I love this idea. Where did you get the Porch Slat board from? I looked on the Wood Connection but could not locate. I look forward to hearing from you.
