We don’t know about you guys, but we get pretty excited to see St. Patrick’s day stuff start showing up in because it means Spring is right around the corner! Easter is quick to follow, and then warmer days are headed our way for sure! All the green for St. Patrick’s Day is like a breath of fresh air and we will embrace as much green as we can at this time of year! 😉
Steff came across a picture of a moss covered hat for St. Patrick’s Day on Pinterest, and we LOVED it. There was no existing tutorial to be found, so of course; we made one. This St. Patrick’s Day door hanger is a breeze to make and costs less than $15!
Here’s what you need:
- White Poster
- Foam board
- X-acto knife
- Sheet moss
- Hot glue gun
- Gold paint and glitter
- Burlap ribbon
How to make it:
Start by folding the poster in half. This will be the pattern for the foam board. Use a ruler and pencil to draw a half hat shape. This is the same technique we have all used to make hearts. Draw the shape with the fold to the inside. It may take a couple tries to get it just how you want.
Here are the measurements we ended up using on our hat: Top- 5 1/2 inches, Tall side- 10 inches, Top brim- 4 inches, Brim side- 3 1/2 inches, Brim bottom- 9 1/2 inches. The picture below should help make sense out of the measurements. 🙂
Next, cut out the poster hat and trace it onto the foam board.
Now, use the ruler and X- acto knife to cut out the foam board hat.
Ta-da!
Now that you have the hat shaped foam board, it’s time to bust out the moss. This is some sheet moss we picked up at Hobby Lobby.
Lay the sheet moss moss side down and trace the foam board hat onto it. Trace about 1/4 of an inch bigger than the hat so it can wrap around the foam hat a bit.
Mark where the hat will go on the sheet moss and start gluing.
Place the foam hat, using your marks as a guide. Then start gluing all the sides up.
Trim a little off the corners to eliminate bulk.
Now for the shamrock! Trace a shamrock shape onto some foam board. (We traced a wood shamrock from THIS project.) Cut out using the X-acto knife.
Now paint the sides with gold paint.
Then paint the front of the shamrock with glue and sprinkle it with glitter.
HUGE TIP: Use some spray sealer OR some aerosol hairspray to seal the glitter. Yep-hairspray! It totally works!
Glue a strip of burlap ribbon onto the hat and once the shamrock is dry, glue it to the burlap ribbon.
To hang it, attach some burlap ribbon to the back using hot glue.
That’s it! This cute St. Patrick’s Day door hanger is ready to hang!
