Felt Heart Wreath

January 25, 2017 By: Melanie

Felt Petal Wreath-Heart shaped and perfect for Valentine's Day!We’re so excited to share this felt heart wreath today!  We’ve used the same petal technique to make a pretty burlap wreath HERE  and a patriotic (red, white, and blue) version HERE.  We LOVE how this one turned out for Valentine’s Day!  It is so easy to make, and really a fun project!

This wreath is our Make it Take it craft night project of the month!  Don’t know what that is?!  Well, it’s a craft night hosted by you, but we do all the hard work 😉 Invite your friends over to make the craft of the month, and we will bring everything needed to complete the craft, including ourselves, to teach every step along the way.  Click right HERE to learn more.  We are so excited about this new adventure!

Okay, let’s get to the tutorial!Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-04 12.29.06Here’s what you need:

  • 12 inch heart shaped foam wreath
  • Straight pins (size 20-1.25 inch)
  • 1/2 yard of red felt
  • Rotary cutter and matFelt Heart Wreath2017-01-15 16.47.49

Start by cutting a couple strips the length of the felt and about 2 inches wide to wrap the wreath form. Then cut 3 1/2 by 3 1/2 inch squares.  We used 60.  A half yard of felt will be plenty!Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 13.34.57

Now wrap the wreath form starting at the bottom point.  Wrap the felt as shown below to get the best coverage.Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 14.13.13

Secure with 2 pins.Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 14.14.35

When the first strip runs out, use 2 pins to secure the end of the first strip and the beginning of the next strip.Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 14.14.20

It doesn’t have to be perfect, as it will be mostly covered by the folded petals.Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 14.19.46

Now for the good part!  Take one felt square,Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 14.20.36

fold it into a triangle,Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 14.20.49

now fold one point into the center,Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 14.21.37

and then the other point into the center.  Make sure the points overlap so the pin will go through both.Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 14.21.52

Use a pin to secure the folded felt petal to the wreath.  Now you just repeat with all the squares!Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 14.23.13

Place each petal so it is covering approximately half of the petal above it.Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 14.23.08

All the petals will go the same direction as you work your way around the heart shape.  Place 13 felt petals on each side of the wreath form.  Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 15.09.10

Once that first row is done, start working on the outside row.  Pin a petal in between each petal from the first row.  Pin it as close to the center as you can, but angled out.Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 15.12.18

Work your way around the entire outside using up about 13 per side again.Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-16 15.12.29

With the remaining felt petals, fill in a few spots around the inside of the wreath.  Then you can gently twist some or all of the petals until it looks just right!  Be sure to exaggerate the heart shape with your petal placement so it will maintain a heart look.Felt Heart Wreath2017-01-04 12.29.06To hang our wreath, we just looped a piece of jute, tied a knot and pushed a pin through the knot into the back of the wreath.  You could use some ribbon or whatever you want to hang your wreath!  It’s just so simple and pretty!
