Trick or Treat Plank Sign

September 25, 2017 By: Melanie

We are so excited for this time of year!  There’s just so much to love about Fall and Halloween!  Fall crafting being one of those things and this cute Trick or Treat Plank Sign is such a perfect addition to any Halloween decor.

This is also a project we are offering as an at home craft party, if you have a kit from us click HERE for a kit specific tutorial. (If you’d like to learn more about our craft parties click HERE.)

We made a sign just like this a couple years ago, this is a slight variation from the Trick or Treat sign we made previously.  The biggest change is we use vinyl on this version.  (Click HERE to see the other version.)  We also simplified the bow, which we think is actually cuter!  Let’s get to the tutorial so you can make one of your own!

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Wood plank sign
  • White paint
  • Foam paint brush
  • TRICK or TREAT vinyl
  • Ribbon
  • Hot glue gun
  • Sanding block (optional)

How to make it

Start with a wood plank sign.  We made ours using 1×4’s cut to 18 inches.  For more details on how to make the plank sign see HERE.  For this sign, we used a brad nailer to attach the cross boards.  Paint the sign white.  One or two coats is all you need depending on the look you want- one coat will give you a nice white washed look, tow coats will give you more coverage.

Apply the vinyl

Once the sign is completely dry, it’s time to apply the vinyl.  We designed and cut our TRICK or TREAT words using the Silhouette Cameo.  We cut them as separate words, weeded the vinyl and placed transfer tape on them.

Peel away the white backing and place the words how you would like them on the sign.  Leave the top slat free for the bow.  Now press the words down using a vinyl presser or just a credit card.

Peel off the clear transfer tape leaving the words behind.

Add the bow

This is the easiest bow you’ll ever make- there is no actual bow tying here!  Take a 12 inch piece of ribbon (ours is 1.5 inches wide) and simply tie a knot right in the center.

For the V cut ribbon ends, fold the ribbon in half lengthwise. Then cut across the ribbon at about a 45 degree angle, starting at the folded side and cutting upwards toward the outer edge.

Last, simply hot glue the ribbon to the top slat of the sign.  Place the hot glue on the knot of the ribbon and center it on the sign.

That’s it!  So cute!

Thanks for crafting with us!
