How to Apply Vinyl

April 13, 2018 By: Melanie

Hi there!  This post is probably long overdue- How to Apply Vinyl.  We use vinyl for A LOT of the crafts we do both at the Wood Connection and our home craft parties.  Many of you may totally know what you’re doing when it comes to vinyl, this quick tutorial is more for any of you who don’t totally know what you’re doing when it comes to vinyl!  Vinyl is basically like stickers for grown ups-it’s pretty much the best when it comes to the crafting world.

Today we’re really just talking about how to APPLY vinyl, not how to cut or prep vinyl.  We’ll talk about that in another post.

Okay, let’s get to it!

Here’s what you need:

  • Vinyl design (possibly purchased from us ;))
  • Painted or stained wood block
  • Vinyl squeegee

There are 3 parts to a vinyl design:  the actual vinyl words or image, the backing, and the transfer tape. (The transfer tape is the clear, sticky top sheet.)

With every vinyl design you will start by peeling the transfer tape away from the white backing.  The words and/or design will come up with the transfer tape.

Place the transfer tape on your surface.  It can be lifted and moved if necessary before pressing it down.

Once it is placed where you want it, press the words down.  We love using a vinyl squeegee to press the vinyl, but if you don’t have one a credit card actually works pretty well.

Now peel away the transfer tape, leaving the words on the wood surface.  The vinyl squeegee (or credit card) can be helpful  for pressing the vinyl down as you pull away the transfer tape, but isn’t always necessary.  Also, we have found that peeling at a steep angle works best when removing the transfer tape.

Once the transfer tape is completely removed, use the squeegee to press the words down one more time and it’s done! That’s all there is to it!  So easy right?!

Even better than stickers right?! We love it.

Here are a just few other crafts we have used vinyl for:

Thankful sign– we used the reversed vinyl technique for this one. Perfect for working with stained wood!

Funny Painted pots– vinyl isn’t just for wood!
