Okay, let’s get to the tutorial!
Here’s what you need:
- 6 x 9 wood block
- Black paint
- Hammer
- Wire nails (18 gauge x 3/4 in.)
- Crochet thread (12-15 yards)
- Skull Template
How to make it:
Step 1- Paint:
Paint the entire block black. Let dry.
Step 2- Nails:
Download our skull template HERE. Place the template on the block. You will put a nail on all the dots, so easy! Very first, hammer a nail at the top and one at the bottom to hold the template in place.
Now start hammering the nails working left to right.
This picture shows about how far to hammer them in. A few good taps should do it.
Once you have a nail on each dot, tear the paper off.
Step 3- String:
Now for the really fun part! Start at the bottom, tying the string in a double knot around one nail.
Wrap the string around each nail once and go around the outside of the skull only.
From here start filling in the bottom. There are no rules here! Just string from nail to nail however it looks good to you until it’s filled in.
String the teeth in at this point.
Once the mouth area is filled in, move up to the nose. Outline the nose and begin filling in working your way to the right eye (or left…it doesn’t matter which direction you go, just remember to work upwards and around.)
Just keep stringing! Be sure to hold the string tight as you go.
Work your way over to the left eye and….you know what to do. 😉
String and fill, working around as you go.
If there are any spots you want to fill in more now is the time to string your way to those areas. We happened to end at the bottom, but it doesn’t matter where you end.
Tie a double knot around the nail to finish. You will make the knot loop around the nail to tie it off.
Cut the ends to be about the length from nail to nail.
If your ends aren’t tucking well, put a little Elmer’s glue on your fingers and press the cut ends to glue them to the tight string.
That’s it! This bad boy is ready to spook up your space!
